Aptera rolls out first pre-production vehicle, promises shipments in October

January 23rd, 2009 | Category: Engadget

Although the swoopy Aptera electric went up for pre-orders back in October of 2007, we haven’t really seen much of the futuristic car outside of the odd Star Trek cameo. Hopefully that’s about to change, though — the company just rolled out the first pre-production example its flagship model, the 2e. The three-wheeled car gets the equivalent of 200mpg, and the company claims the lithium-ion battery pack will last for 100 miles on a single charge. Aptera isn’t giving out final pricing information apart from “between ,000 and ,000″ but it says over 4,000 potential customers have already signed up for a planned California-only October release. We’ll see how it goes — and we’d bet the folks at the Automotive X-Prize are keeping a sharp eye as well.

Windows 7 Beta in-depth impressions

January 23rd, 2009 | Category: Engadget

We’ve covered a few tidbits of what the Windows 7 Beta has to offer, including the mess of machines we’ve installed it on, but we finally gathered together all our thoughts and impressions of the OS into one meaty pile of words and screencaps. Check out all our ramblings after the break.

Option GlobeSurfer III wireless 3G router asks, ‘am I pretty?’

January 23rd, 2009 | Category: Engadget

We’ve seen a few 3G routers in our day, and now Option’s back with its newest, aimed at homes and small businesses. The GlobeSurfer III was designed to look like something you’d actually want in your house (whether or not they actually hit the mark is your call — the company used the word “stylish” so much in its PR that we felt we had to mention it) and the management software is meant to be easy enough that even networking novices could get their collective heads ’round it. Based on the Qualcomm 7225 chipset, this guy boasts HSUPA uploads up to 5.76 Mbps and downloads up to 7.2 Mbps. Also part of the deal is a USB port for sharing hardware over the network — perfect for serving up media, sharing printers and the like. Pricing and availability to be announced.
