Phenom X2s actually named Athlon X2 7000 series

January 06th, 2009 | Category: General Computers

For whatever reason, AMD decided to rename(Well, I guess it wasn’t *official*) its Phenom X2 processors. The flagship processor in this series will be the Athlon X2 7750, which is clocked at 2.7 ghz. It will, though, have an unlocked multiplier for all those overclockers.

Check out the review for yourself.

AMD’s latest roadmap shown to channel partners; Includes Phenom X2s

August 29th, 2008 | Category: General Computers

So, the Phenom X2 lives! The clock speeds will likely range from 1.9-2.3 ghz, which is a lot less than many people expected because of the lesser number of cores. It will likely take only 45 watts to run. Pretty impressive, but the most interesting part will be the “black edition” that will be released also. The X2s will have 1mb of L2 cache and 2mb of L3 cache.

It should be very interesting to see how they stack up against the current Athlon 64 X2s.

Guru3d.com Reviews The New BFG Tech Additions: 8800 GT OCX, 9600 GT OCX

August 22nd, 2008 | Category: General Computers

Just to stop the enormous confusion about the names of the nvidia cards. So, let me count all of them: OCX, GTX, GT, GTS, GSO, GS, GX2, FX (has not be used since 5000 series), XT (Limited; mostly on the 6800 series), GTX+, LE (On the 5200 series.) So, around 11. Maybe more. Now I know all the video card junkies out there (including me) are saying “Oh, it’s so easy!” In my opinion, at least, the average joe would be completely lost. Gladly, though, most people get their video cards in pre-configured setups like Dell, HP, etc. This new “OCX” ending stands for “Overclocked extreme edition.”

Well now that I’ve gotten off topic enough, lets talk about the new review. These two cards are basically just overclocked versions of the stock cards with fancy new coolers. I don’t like to spoil the results, so I’ll let you check it out for yourself.

OpenGL 3.0 Released Today — Legions of Fans Upset

August 11th, 2008 | Category: General Computers

This is truly a sad day for Linux developers. OpenGL has been known for being a minefield to develop for and that difficulty fueled the development of version 3. On the OpenGL forums, there is an absolute firestorm occurring. So much so that you get a prompt that the site is having an internal server error when you try to get to the forums. Legions of developers and gamers are criticizing Khronus, the developer of OpenGL, for coming out with OpenGL 2.0 plus a few extensions, but retaining all of the old extensions that had varying stability. This is a major win for Microsoft, who makes DirectX. Many of the disavowed OpenGL developers are saying that they will now jump ship to DirectX 10 and 11. This was definitely not the grand unveiling that Khronus had expected.

Intel: Nehalem Processor to be called ‘Core i7′

August 11th, 2008 | Category: General Computers

We’re just as clueless as you are on this. Who knows, maybe Intel trying to copy from Apple with it’s little ‘i’ thing. Wouldn’t be a bad idea. Look how many iPhone 3G’s apple sold in one day. I really think Apple could release iThisThingRealSucksAndWereRippingYouOff and it would sell like crazy.

AMD Talks About DirectX 11 and GPGPU Support

August 06th, 2008 | Category: General Computers

AMD announced that it would support DirectX 11 fully. Not only that, but they will also have full support for OpenCL, which enables the GPU to be used for general computing tasks that the CPU usually does. It’s good that AMD jumped on the bandwagon because Nvidia seems to be leading the way with it’s Physx support and Gigathread technology. AMD’s counter to Nvidia’s Gigathread™ is AMD Stream™. Those both mean that there will be general purpose threads or streams to handle anything that an application needs. Pretty much filling in the cracks.

An AMD slide from one of their conferences.

Maximumpc.com somehow got a Nehalem processor and a motherboard to use it with. A little fishy, but who cares!

Your geekdom is coming to fruition.

Mozilla Shows Off Concept Browser “Aurora”

August 06th, 2008 | Category: General Computers

At Mozilla, the company that made Firefox, they’ve been working on some very exciting new ideas. Most of which, came from their own user base. That’s one thing Internet Explorer doesn’t have; users who actually want to use the browser. This concept browser is all about new ways of acquiring information and communicating with others. For those who can’t see the video, it’s all about two people in different locations using the browser and talking about if it’ll rain in their area. Yeah, I know, sounds riveting, right? Click on the title link to see the video after the jump.

Aurora Concept (Part 1)

Aurora (Part 1) from Adaptive Path on Vimeo.

This video shows how people can communicate through their browser and new ways of finding information. That, to me, shows that Mozilla is on the bleeding-edge in web browsing, while Microsoft is still trying to get IE 8 Beta 2 out of the door. I almost feel sorry for Microsoft. Almost.
